What is tadalafil used for?

Tadalafil is a medicine that is commonly used for the following conditions.

• Erectile dysfunction, a condition where you have trouble getting or keeping an erection
• Pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition where you have high blood pressure in the blood vessels that carry blood from your heart to your lungs
• Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland has become enlarged  

Tadalafil may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.

Tadalafil works by blocking the activity of an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5). This enzyme usually stops some types of muscles from relaxing, including the muscles lining some types of blood vessels. By blocking PDE5, the muscles will relax and blood flow increases. For erectile dysfunction, it increases blood flow to the penis when aroused. This makes it easier to get and keep an erection. For pulmonary arterial hypertension, tadalafil relaxes the blood vessels in the lungs. This lowers blood pressure and reduces strain on the heart. For benign prostatic hyperplasia, tadalafil relaxes the muscles of the bladder and prostate, making it easier to urinate and reducing symptoms.

• 20 mg/5 mL oral suspension

Tadalafil should be stored at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place.

What are the serious side effects of tadalafil?

While less common, the most serious side effects of tadalafil are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Tadalafil may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop taking tadalafil and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

• Breathing problems or wheezing
• Racing heart
• Fever or general ill feeling
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
• Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
• Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
• Nausea or vomiting
• Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
• Stomach cramps
• Joint pain

Painful, Prolonged Erection (Priapism). Tadalafil may cause an unwanted erection that is persistent, painful, and that may occur without sexual arousal. Permanent damage to the penis may occur if priapism is not treated quickly. Stop taking tadalafil and get emergency help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of priapism.

• Erection lasting for more than 4 hours
• Erection that is unrelated to sexual stimulation
• Painful or tender penis

Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Tadalafil may cause low blood pressure. If you feel faint or dizzy, lie down. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following symptoms of low blood pressure.

• Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
• Confusion
• Feeling weak or tired

Vision Changes. Tadalafil can cause mild, temporary vision changes such as seeing a blue tint, abnormal colors, blurry vision, or sensitivity to light. Though rare, some people have reported permanent vision loss. Stop taking tadalafil and get help right away if you have sudden vision loss in one or both eyes.

Hearing Loss. Tadalafil may cause a sudden decrease or loss of hearing. Stop taking tadalafil and tell your healthcare provider right away if you experience hearing loss or have any of the following symptoms.

• Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
• Dizziness
